About Platforms and Services 

The Platforms and Services Section forms part of ECMWF’s Computing Department, and is responsible for delivering a wide range of services including mission-critical virtual and bare-metal server infrastructure, data centre and wide area networks, security, monitoring and analytics, enterprise ICT, as well as the toolchain to support software development, integration and testing, and automated deployment for in-house or community software developers.

Summary of the role

ECMWF in the recent years has embarked on an initiative to explore the offering of Cloud Computing service and make available cloud resources close to its data and existing HPC and storage infrastructure. In the context of this effort, ECMWF is participating in the EO4EU project which aims to provide innovative tools, methodologies and approaches that would assist a wide spectrum of users, from domain experts and professionals to simple citizens to benefit from Earth Observation (EO) data. EO4EU will deliver dynamic data mapping and labelling based on AI adding FAIRness to the system and data. EO4EU will also introduce an ecosystem for holistic management of EO data, bridging the gap among domain experts and end users, bringing in the foreground technological advances to address the market straightness towards a wider usage of EO data.

EO4EU envisages to boost the Earth Observation data market, providing a digestible data information model for a wide range of EO data, through dynamic data annotation and a state-of-the-art serverless processing by leveraging important European Cloud & HPC infrastructures.

The successful candidate will apply their skills, knowledge, and expertise to help achieving the goals, complete the deliverables of the EO4EU project and also contribute to other related activities within the organization. It is anticipated that the duties for this position may change and evolve over time, to address the changing Cloud Computing needs of ECMWF and its Member States.


Main duties and key responsibilities

  • Actively contributing to EO4EU EC funded project
  • Representing ECMWF in meetings with Member States, partners, vendors, and at international technical conferences
  • Contributing to reports, dissemination and technology transfer activities of the eo4eu project
  • Deploying, maintaining, and troubleshooting issues on cloud IaaS, PaaS and SaaS deployments of the EO4EU project
  • Resolving complex problems relating to cloud and storage with a particular focus on stability and performance
  • Promoting technical innovation and reliable, robust service delivery within the EO4EU project and the organisation

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly listening to and respecting the views of others
  • Enthusiasm to tackle challenging research questions when working with complex technical tools and willingness to learn new algorithms, technologies, and methodologies
  • Ability to work in a team at ECMWF and within eo4eu towards a common goal in an interdisciplinary research project
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with an independent and proactive approach, together with an interest in identifying, investigating, and solving technical challenges

Education, experience, knowledge and skills (including language)

Education:

  • A university degree, or equivalent, in a discipline related to computer science, physics, mathematics, or engineering is required

Experience:

  • Working in a Cloud Computing role
  • Successfully deploying and configuring cloud services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS)
  • Infrastructure automation and virtualisation technologies
  • Design and working experience on microservices and related technologies like Function as a Service (FaaS)
  • Handling large-volume scientific data, including cataloguing and discovery

Knowledge and Skills 

  • Strong knowledge of container and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes (Rancher or OpenShift)
  • Understanding of configuration, administration, and troubleshooting of cloud infrastructures like OpenStack and Software Defined Storage platforms, such as Ceph
  • Understanding of traditional networking and Software Defined Network (SDN) concepts 
  • Monitoring and reporting tools in cloud environments
  • Security concepts such as federated user single sign-on and implementing, maintaining and auditing security controls and technologies in federated, hybrid cloud infrastructures
  • Understanding of Big Data processing technologies such as Apache Spark, and the challenges involved in handling large-volume data sets, would be an asset

  • Candidates must be able to work effectively in English, and interviews will be conducted in English

Grade remuneration

The successful candidate will be recruited at the A2 grade, according to the scales of the Co-ordinated Organisations and the annual basic salary will be £63,782.28 (GB) or EUR 78,035.40 (DE) or EUR 66,286.92 (IT) net of tax. ECMWF also offers a generous benefits package, including a flexible teleworking policy. The position is assigned to the employment category STF-PL as defined in the ECMWF Staff Regulations. Length of contract: The contract duration is to 31 May 2025, subject to available funding

Location: The preferred location is Bologna, Italy, but the position can be based any of the ECMWF duty stations in Reading, UK, Bonn, Germany or in Bologna, Italy.

As a multi-site organisation, ECMWF has adopted a hybrid organisation model which allows flexibility to staff to mix office working and teleworking.
